What are disc springs?

A disc spring is a conically shaped washer that generates an axial load when compressed. It is used as a compression spring and is ideal when forces are high and travel is relatively limited. Its geometry delivers high force with minimal deflection, making it ideal where space and weight are restricted.

Disc springs can be stacked in series or parallel to increase travel or force. Typically manufactured from spring steel, disc springs offer outstanding fatigue resistance, excellent energy storage capacity, and long service life.

These versatile components are used in a wide range of applications, from automotive clutches, brakes, and valve actuation systems to vibration dampening in heavy machinery.

Custom disc springs

Every application has unique demands, and our disc springs are designed to meet them. We work closely with you to develop special disc springs tailored to your exact performance requirements, adjusting dimensions, selecting materials, and optimizing load-deflection characteristics.

Supported by decades of engineering expertise and a global supply network, we ensure every disc spring is fully optimized for its intended use.

Types of disc springs

There are several configurations of disc springs available, each suited to specific load requirements, space constraints, and performance conditions. Our engineering team manufactures and supplies:

  • A flat stainless steel disc spring with a hole in the center.

    Single disc springs

The most common configuration, used individually to provide a precise load over a short deflection range. Ideal for applications where high force is required in a compact space.

  • A flat stainless steel disc spring with a hole in the center.

    Disc spring series stack

Multiple disc springs stacked in series increase travel while maintaining the same load as a single spring. Used where greater deflection is needed without increasing force.

  • A flat stainless steel disc spring with a hole in the center.

    Stack disc spring in parallel

Parallel stacking increases load capacity while keeping deflection the same as a single spring. Commonly used in heavy-duty applications requiring very high forces.

  • A flat stainless steel disc spring with a hole in the center.

    Combination stacks

A mix of series and parallel stacking allows fine-tuning of both load and travel characteristics. Often used in highly specialized applications where precise performance is critical.

    Slotted disc springs

Featuring radial slots to modify the load-deflection curve and reduce spring stiffness. Used where controlled flexibility and a softer spring rate are needed.

Advanced disc spring manufacturing

Our disc springs are manufactured for precision, strength, and reliable performance in the most demanding applications. Using advanced forming methods and premium materials, we achieve consistent quality, repeatable performance, and optimal load characteristics in every spring. Our processes are tailored to meet exact specifications, from heavy industrial equipment to high-performance aerospace systems.

  • CNC forming – precision manufacturing for consistent load-deflection performance
  • Quality assurance – ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 certified
  • Engineered for durability – designed to deliver long service life under extreme loads

How do disc springs work?

A disc spring is designed to generate an axial load when compressed, using its conical geometry to produce high force within a small deflection range. When stacked in series or parallel, these springs can be configured to increase travel, load capacity, or both, depending on application requirements.

Their design allows for precise load control, compensating for thermal expansion, wear, and relaxation in mechanical systems. Even under extreme conditions, the geometry ensures consistent performance, uniform load distribution, and long-term reliability.

Disc spring materials

The materials used to engineer disc springs directly impact their performance, durability, and service life. Spring steel disc springs are a popular choice for their high strength, fatigue resistance, and cost efficiency, making them suitable for a wide range of general-purpose applications. For environments with high humidity, corrosive agents, or extreme temperatures, stainless steel provides long-lasting protection without compromising load performance.

In the most demanding conditions, such as aerospace, offshore, or power generation, super alloys like Inconel deliver exceptional resistance to heat, oxidation, and wear. Lesjöfors offers one of the industry’s most extensive selections of disc spring materials. Our engineers work with you to select the best material for your application, ensuring optimal performance in any operating environment.

Common materials include:

  • Spring steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Super alloys (e.g., Inconel)
