Coil Springs & Wire forms

Garter springs

Garter springs are helical springs formed into a continuous loop, engineered to exert a constant radial force, either inward or outward, around a cylindrical component. They are ideal for circular assemblies that demand consistent tension or pressure, such as sealing systems, shaft retention, and belt-driven mechanisms.

At Lesjöfors, we supply garter springs, manufactured in a broad range of sizes and materials to exacting quality standards. Whether you’re reinforcing a critical seal or maintaining electrical contact, our springs deliver reliable, high-performance results, backed by decades of precision engineering expertise.

What are garter springs?

Garter springs are used in both internal and external energizing applications and come in open or closed coil designs. They are commonly used across a number of sealing systems, where they maintain consistent contact or a sealing force, even when components are misaligned or out-of-round. Connection options include insert fittings, cone ends, and laser welding.

Custom garter springs

For complex or specialized requirements, we provide fully custom-engineered garter springs. From initial concept through to final production, our expert engineers work closely with you to define critical parameters such as diameter, wire size, connection method, and material grade.

We design for the most demanding environments, including corrosive, high-temperature, high-cycle conditions, or super oxygenated seawater, with flexible end connection options and precision force control.

Garter spring design: connection types

Lesjöfors supplies connection options to suit various assembly, maintenance, and space requirements – with expert support to help you make the right choice. Our engineers work closely with you to recommend the most effective solution for your application, ensuring long-term reliability, efficient installation, and optimal system performance.

  • Hook & eye

A practical, reusable joining method featuring a hook on one end and a loop on the other. Ideal for applications requiring frequent adjustment or replacement where a shaft cannot be pulled out.

  • Nib joint/cone end

A compact, semi-permanent connection where one end is reduced to fit inside the other. Suitable for tight spaces and sealed systems.

How do garter springs work?

Garter springs work by exerting a uniform radial pressure around a circular component. When stretched into position, they contract to apply consistent inward pressure, holding the spring securely in place and maintaining reliable contact with the surrounding surface. This self-adjusting force is especially valuable in dynamic environments where constant pressure is needed for stability, sealing, or electrical connectivity.

Garter spring materials

Material selection plays a vital role in the performance, durability, and cost-efficiency of a garter spring. These springs must maintain consistent force across fluctuating temperatures and challenging environmental conditions, making the right material choice essential for reliable function.

At Lesjöfors, we manufacture garter springs in a range of materials, including carbon steel for strength and value, and stainless steel or exotic alloys for superior corrosion resistance in humid or chemically aggressive environments in addition to silver and bronze materials for electrical connectivity functionality. Each spring is tailored to your application, with material and connection methods selected for optimal performance.

If you're working with challenging conditions or have specific performance requirements, our engineers are here to help you choose the best material solution.
