What are compression springs?
Compression springs, also known as coil springs, are a type of mechanical spring designed to resist compressive forces and return to their original length once the force is removed. Typically, they are made from coiled wire in the shape of an open helix.
At Lesjöfors, we design and manufacture compression springs of all sizes, from 0.03mm 80mm in wire diameter for a range of industries, including automotive, electronics, marine, agriculture, and energy.

Types of compression springs
There are many types of compression springs, and our hot and cold coil spring manufacturing specialists are experts in the field of:
Straight coil springs
The most popular compression spring with wire coiled at the same diameter throughout the length. Also known as parallel springs or cylindrical springs.
Convex springs
These compression springs have larger diameters in the middle than at the ends. These can also be called barrel springs.
Concave springs
With an hourglass shape with a smaller diameter coil in the middle, this symmetry allows the coil spring to be centrally located over a specific point.
Conical springs
Conical springs are also known as tapered springs. These compression springs are coiled with increasing or decreasing outer diameters, providing a nearly conical spring shape.
Variable pitch springs
A spring with varied coil spacing, delivering varying coil heights across the coil spring's length.
Banana springs
Shaped as the name suggests, and also called sideload springs, the shape counteracts lateral forces.

Advanced compression spring manufacturing
Our compression springs are built to last, providing superior performance and durability for every application from light usage to heavy-duty applications. We manufacture a wide range of wire diameters, and our expertise and precision manufacturing process ensure that every spring meets the highest quality standards.
We cold coil springs up to 22mm wire diameter and hot coil for larger springs.
Our maximum bar diameter for hot coiling is 80 mm. The conditioning processes – heat treatment, shot peening and presetting – are adapted according to the requirements. We offer different surface treatments for corrosion resistance or desired visual appearance.
- Quality assurance - ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 13485:2016, IATF 16949 certified
- Engineered to achieve peak performance aligned with application needs

How do compression springs work?
Compression springs have a unique design with a compressed helix shape that allows them to resist compressive forces.
Applying a load to the compression spring forces it to compress and condense. The wire spaces then reduce in size until the spring’s wire touches, reaching the spring's maximum compressed length.
The coils provide an opposing force when compressed - storing the force until it is released. This mechanism is crucial in applications like shock absorbers and adjustment mechanisms.

Compression spring materials
Selecting the right material for a compression spring is crucial, as it determines performance, durability, and suitability for specific applications. Key factors include tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and operating temperature range, each influencing how the spring performs under real-world conditions.
Materials such as stainless steel and Inconel are selected based on these demands, each offering distinct advantages. Stainless steel is valued for its strength and corrosion resistance, making it well-suited for general-purpose use. Inconel, on the other hand, is often used in high-temperature environments due to its exceptional heat resistance. Material selection is a critical step that directly affects the reliability and service life of a compression spring.
Lesjöfors maintains one of the world’s largest inventories of chrome silicon and chrome vanadium wire, enabling us to meet customer demands quickly and consistently as a trusted global spring supplier.
