What are compression gas springs?

Compression gas springs, also known as hydraulic gas springs, provide controlled force for lifting, lowering, or supporting loads smoothly. Motion is controlled by a piston, with gas pressure and hydraulic dampening at the end of the stroke for controlled movement.

As the most common type of gas spring, they are used for the safe opening and closing of automotive hatches, hoods, and panels, as well as in ventilation systems, ergonomic furniture, and industrial machinery. This combination of gas pressure and hydraulic dampening ensures precise and reliable motion control.

Custom compression gas springs

When an off-the-shelf product doesn’t quite meet requirements, Lesjöfors can develop custom compression gas springs tailored to your exact needs. Working closely with you, we refine dimensions, forces, damping characteristics, and mounting options to create a solution that fits perfectly.

Backed by decades of engineering expertise, every custom spring is optimized for performance, safety, and long-term durability.

Types of compression gas springs

Compression gas springs are available in multiple designs to meet different functional and environmental requirements. Our specialists can supply and engineer the following types:

  • A sleek, modern black and silver compression gas spring against a solid white background.

Standard fixed force compression gas springs

Pre-charged with nitrogen to a specific pressure, these springs deliver consistent force for controlled opening, closing, and positioning. They are the most commonly used type across industries.

  • A sleek, black and silver common dynamic gas spring on a transparent background. The spring has a shiny metallic tip and a black bigger part.

    Adjustable force compression gas springs

These allow fine-tuning of internal pressure, enabling you to achieve the exact force required for your application. Ideal for prototyping or variable-load environments.

  • A stainless steel compression gas spring. The spring has a silvery shiny finish.

    Stainless steel compression gas springs

Manufactured in corrosion-resistant stainless steel, these springs are suitable for demanding environments such as marine, medical, and food-processing industries.

How do compression gas springs work?

Compression gas springs operate by storing energy in compressed nitrogen gas, which is sealed inside a cylinder. When force is applied, a piston rod pushes into the cylinder, increasing internal pressure. The gas then generates an opposing force, controlling motion with smooth, cushioned movement.

Oil damping at the end of the stroke ensures controlled speed and prevents impact. This mechanism makes compression gas springs ideal for applications that require the safe opening, closing, lifting, or positioning of components.

Compression gas spring materials

Lesjöfors manufactures compression gas springs using high-quality materials and precision finishes to withstand demanding operating conditions. Cylinders are produced from pressure-rated carbon steel, delivering excellent strength and cost efficiency for automotive, industrial, and general use. Piston rods are finely polished and treated with chrome plating or black nitriding, ensuring superior wear resistance and corrosion protection. Additional coatings further extend service life by protecting against environmental exposure.

For applications exposed to moisture, cleaning agents, or strict hygiene standards, stainless steel compression gas springs provide reliable corrosion resistance without compromising performance. High-performance polymer seals and precision guides maintain internal pressure and ensure smooth damping over time, guaranteeing consistent operation in every application.
